TRU improvements to Huddersfield Railway Station underway
Network Rail have begun improvements to Huddersfield Railway Station as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade.
What is the Transpennine Route Upgrade?
The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is Network Rail’s major programme of railway improvements which are set to improve journeys for passengers travelling between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.
Network Rail are investing billions in better connecting our towns and cities across the north of England, with more frequent, faster trains and a cleaner, greener railway. Huddersfield is a key point on the TRU route.
What’s happening in Huddersfield?
Work has already begun inside the station, improving waiting areas and toilets. While this work is taking place, there’s a temporary toilet block available on Platform 4.
When this work is complete, waits at Huddersfield Railway Station should be more comfortable for all passengers.
Next steps
From next year, Network Rail will begin work on the outside of the station. They will be performing restorations to the roof, which will mean the station’s long-stay car park will be temporarily closed and you’ll see extra signage to direct traffic around St. George’s Square.

We’re fully supportive of this work to improve our connectivity with the rest of the north and beyond, but this project is being funded and managed by Network Rail.
