Building safety improvements to begin across Kirklees Council’s six-storey blocks

We’re moving forward with plans to improve building safety measures across all 12, six-storey blocks in Kirklees. Specialist contractors, Fortem Solutions Ltd will deliver the programme.

This project is a result of building and fire safety surveys commissioned in 2021. We will set out to work on two blocks at a time, with work expected to start on Buckden Court and Hebden Court in Spring 2024.

What are the planned improvements?

Works will include installation of a sprinkler system, a range of improved fire safety measures throughout the block, including doors and installing a new render system that meets the requirements of new building regulations.

Additional works will include replacing bathrooms and switching from gas to electrical mains. Council housing teams will have conversations with tenants and leaseholders, which will include a consultation early next year.

Residents can ask questions and find out more information about the programme by contacting the council’s Fire Safety team at Resident.FireSafety@kirklees.gov.uk.

Councillor Moses Crook, Cabinet Member for Housing and Highways, said:

“I’m pleased we’re moving forward with the building safety programme for council housing and will begin working on six-storey blocks next year.

“These improvements are essential to keep our tenants and leaseholders safe and improve the quality of homes. Works will be installed to the highest standard with features to reduce our impact on the climate and reduce bills.

“We will keep tenants informed of our plans from start to finish and give them the opportunity to discuss the project in detail.”
