Transpennine Route Upgrade’s next phase of work on Huddersfield Railway Station to start in January
On Monday 8 January, the next phase of work will begin on Huddersfield Railway Station as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade.
What is the Transpennine Route Upgrade?
The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a major programme of railway improvements which are set to improve journeys for passengers travelling between Manchester, Leeds and York. Huddersfield is a key point on the TRU route, and one of several stations in Kirklees to undergo improvements as part of the work.
What work is being done?
Work has already started to improve facilities for passengers inside Huddersfield Railway Station, and this next phase will involve work on the outside of the building. This work should take about three years to complete.
What does this mean for Huddersfield?
Through the TRU, billions are being invested to better connect towns and cities across the north of England. It’ll mean more frequent, faster trains and a cleaner, greener railway – tying in with our goals to improve the connectedness of our local towns and villages with the rest of the north and beyond. This is also great for our green agenda, as offering better public transport will help provide local people with more realistic alternatives to travel by car.
This is also, of course, brilliant for the Huddersfield Blueprint. One of the key focal points for the blueprint is the area surrounding St. George’s Square. This investment in creating a modern station and rail network is also a big part of our long-term investment plans for the Station to Stadium Enterprise Corridor – the area extending down towards the John Smith’s Stadium from the station, which has been highlighted for major economic development in Huddersfield.
How will this affect travel?
While work is being performed on the station roof, the long-stay car park and part of Railway Street will be temporarily closed.
There will also be changes to short-stay parking, pick-up and drop-off points throughout the work – all of which will be available throughout, just in slightly different locations. From 8 January, if you’re visiting the station you’ll see extra signage around St. George’s Square helping you find your way around.
The TRU team have warned anyone travelling from Huddersfield to allow extra time for their journeys.
How is this work being funded and delivered?
We’re fully supportive of this work to improve our connectivity with the rest of the north and beyond, but this project is being funded and managed by the Transpennine Route Upgrade enterprise – made up of Network Rail, train operating companies and contractors.
