On Tuesday 12 March cabinet have approved the revised Statement of Community Involvement alongside the councils proposed Local Plan Timetable.

What is the local plan?

The Local Plan lays out how much development we want to achieve and where this development should take place, alongside a suite of guidance around planning applications.

The decision to undergo a full update to the Local Plan was taken based on how much change has taken place since it was launched in 2019, including key contributing factors like the announcement of the Climate Emergency, the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing economic impacts.

Engaging with residents

Members of the public were invited from Monday 20 November 2023 to Friday 5 January 2024 to have their say on the revised Statement of Community Involvement (SCI). The purpose of the SCI is to set out how and when we engage the public around planning policy, and how local people and businesses can get involved in the process.

The consultation statement that has been produced in compliance with Town and Country Planning (Local Planning) Regulations 2012, states who we consulted, a summary of main issues and how they were addressed.

The Local Plan Timetable (LPT) which was also reviewed by cabinet on Tuesday 12 March, sets out when documents will be produced, the brief purpose of those documents and when consultation is likely to happen so residents and businesses are aware and can get involved and share their views.

Our SCI and LPT have been reviewed coinciding with the update to the Local Plan and in line with government legislation.

You can view the Statement of Community Involvement on our website alongside The Local Plan Timetable.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance & Regeneration, says:

Since a full update to the Local Plan was announced, the revised Statement of Community Involvement and Local Plan Timetable will play a key part in how Kirklees residents and businesses can have their say in local planning policies moving forward. Community involvement will play a vital part in the local plan process as it moves forward, and I would encourage residents to get involved and have their say on the plan as it emerges as it affects all our futures.
