Kirklees residents save £678k in food shopping with The Bread and Butter Thing

The Bread and Butter Thing

So far, The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) in Kirklees has saved residents a total of £678,600.00.

TBBT works with factories and supermarket supply chains to save food from landfill and helps people save money on their food shop.

Families who have subscribed to one of the ten hubs in Kirklees will receive three bags of shopping worth £35.00 for just £8.50.

A Kirklees hub member said:

“The Bread and Butter Thing has been a lifeline for me and my family during a difficult time. When my husband lost his job, we were suddenly struggling to make ends meet. We were barely able to afford groceries, and our cupboards were often bare. So, I decided to try TBBT and I was greeted with kindness and compassion.

“I am so thankful for The Bread and Butter Thing and the volunteers who make it all possible. They have helped us to get back on our feet and have given us hope for the future.”

None of this would be possible without volunteers from across Kirklees who have given 13,101 hours of their time.

The hubs don’t just distribute food, TBBT also offer a wrap-around service along with partners like Kirklees Council. The aim is to create a space where people can access mental health support, skills support, and get help and advice on bills and budgeting when they visit their local hub.

Cllr Paul Davies, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services, said:

“These hubs are in the heart of our communities and there is a sense of pride from the customers, the volunteers, and all the staff who make the service a reality.

“In the face of rising food costs, The Bread and Butter Thing is putting quality, healthy food within reach for thousands of families in Kirklees. And in addition to that, they are connecting residents to local services that they may not have benefited from otherwise.”

Anyone is welcome to become a member at any of the hubs across Kirklees, even at busiest times the team will try to accommodate you in the next available slot.

If you sign up as a member and all collection slots are full in that week, you will be prioritised for the following week.
