Change a young person’s life by fostering for Kirklees

Foster care

We’re looking for more people to join our amazing network of foster carers in Kirklees who make a real difference to the lives of children and young people in need.

Foster carers provide welcoming, loving homes that help keep children and young people in familiar surroundings to them, in their local area, at their school and near their family and friends.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, or are interested in learning more, come to one of our free information events.

Our fostering team, and local foster carers, will share the rewarding way in which you can help make a real difference to a young person’s life; explain what fostering entails, the different types of fostering and the training and support you’ll receive. It’s also your opportunity to ask any questions.

If you are over 21 years old and have a spare room to dedicate to a child, we’d love to see you there.

Councillor Viv Kendrick, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services said:

“Fostering is a life changing experience, both for the children or young people, and for the foster carers themselves.

“Our foster carers play a vital role in providing a caring and loving home for those children who are unable, for whatever reason, to be with their own families.

“Children who come into foster care have different circumstances – some need placing in an emergency, for respite or for a short time, while others need a long-term placement. Each child is unique, as is the love, care and supportive environment each foster carer provides.

“We’re looking for additional local people in Kirklees to open their homes, and hearts, to fostering. By living locally, you can provide a young person with familiar surroundings in a community they know, until such time as they can return to their family.

“If you have ever wondered what it would be like to foster, these events are the first step to discovering more from the experts and from some of the amazing people who already foster.”

Who can be a foster carer?

Foster carers are from all walks of life and different backgrounds. This includes all genders, races, religions, and sexual orientations. You can be in a relationship or not, employed or not and with or without children of your own. You must however be over 21 years old, have a spare room and some time to dedicate to a child.

Our foster carers receive expert training and a weekly allowance.

When you foster with us, you’ll have direct access to our many years of experience of fostering, our knowledge of the local area and local expert support networks. This means as a new foster carer, there’s experience on-tap to guide you. When a new challenge comes your way, you’ll be able to chat to an expert or another local foster carer who understands.
