Amelia’s bright future in a library
Amelia is neurodiverse, she is often forgetful and can become easily distracted or fixated on things. She was looking for paid employment but needed some support to find her perfect job, with the right employer, so she contacted REAL Employment. It’s a service that helps people with learning disabilities, autism, and other additional needs to find employment.
Support from REAL Employment
Together with her job coach, they identified Amelia’s skills, and previous experience and talked about jobs she might be interested in. She said she would love to work in a library or museum, and a great opportunity was found at a library in a local college, which was the perfect fit.
Through building a rapport, Amelia’s job coach got to know her by gathering relevant information and finding out that Amelia had a degree in drama and had produced a lot of wonderful digital artwork which was self-taught. Most job seekers want a job in retail, hospitality, admin/IT, etc, but due to Amelia’s talent, our job coach started to think outside the box and helped her apply for different roles in design. Unfortunately, none of these led to an interview, and after a review, she said she would love to work in a library or museum.
Successful job application
Following a successful application, Amelia and her Job Coach prepared for her interview, giving her the skills and confidence she needed. This included doing mock interviews and talking about what she should wear and what to expect.
Amelia is an outgoing and friendly person and has an exuberant personality and was encouraged to just be herself. 3 hours after the interview Amelia rang to say she had got the job!
As part of being a job coach at REAL, I could support her with going to her induction and writing notes so Amelia could concentrate on what was being said. The induction part of a job can be daunting for anyone so I can be with Amelia to help her understand.
