Watch history being made at our Mayor Making Ceremony
You can watch history being made at Huddersfield Town Hall as the new Civic team for 2024-25 will be officially installed at the Mayor Making ceremony.
Currently serving as Deputy Mayor, Councillor Nosheen Dad will officially take office on Wednesday 22 May when the Mayor Making ceremony takes place and current Mayor of Kirklees Councillor Cahal Burke steps down.
Councillor Dad will become the 50th and the youngest Mayor of Kirklees at a ceremony in May. She will also become the first woman of colour and first Muslim woman to hold the role.
Councillor Dad will be joined by her husband Shiraz who will be the Mayor’s Consort.
Councillor Liz Smaje will be joining the Civic Team as Deputy Mayor for 2024/25.
Cllr Dad said:
“Becoming the first citizen of Kirklees is a huge privilege and one I will take enormous pride in.
“I am truly humbled and honoured to be the youngest and first female Asian Mayor of our great district.
“I am looking forward to working with Councillor Liz Smaje who will be my Deputy Mayor in the forthcoming Municipal year. I am sure it will be a great experience for her.
“As the new Mayor, I want to continue to make a difference and have chosen to support the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice as my charity for the year.
“The support children with life-shortening conditions, their families and families living with the loss of child.
“What struck me most about the work of the hospice is the work they do with rainbow mums.
“For those that aren’t familiar with the term rainbow mum or rainbow baby, it is used to describe a baby after a miscarriage, stillbirth or the loss of the child.
“As someone who has two rainbow babies of her own and has sadly had to witness close family and friends go through child and infant loss in recent years I felt an automatic connection to the hospice and the work they do in supporting families and children.
“I know there are many more charities in our borough which I would still like to champion, so please get in touch as it would be a pleasure to see and promote the work you do.
“I’ve had a wonderful time as Deputy Mayor, meeting people doing fantastic work in the borough and contributing to their communities.
“I hope to amplify the voices of everyone in Kirklees, to celebrate the work, and the selflessness of people that sometimes goes unnoticed.
“I am looking forward to meeting many individuals and groups that make Kirklees a great place to live, work and raise a family.
“So please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Civic Office to invite me to come to your event, look around your business or come to your school assembly in inviting me and getting in touch with the Civic Office. I want to promote our great borough and show everybody that we have so much to be proud of.”
