Renovation for tennis courts in local parks

Tennis courts at Crow Nest Park

A number of parks across Kirklees will see investment of over £200,000 in their tennis courts thanks to funding from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

Kirklees Council and LTA recently agreed a partnership which will see 19 courts across four parks refurbished and upgraded with works beginning this month.

Where are the tennis courts located?

Tennis courts at Wilton Park, Batley; Firth Park, Heckmondwike; Greenhead Park, Huddersfield and Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury will be refurbished and upgraded.

In total the project will see £206,427 of investment coming from the LTA Tennis Foundation’s Park Tennis Project. The project will be delivered by the LTA with support from Kirklees’ Parks and Greenspaces Team.

What works will be carried out?

Refurbishments include improvements to existing surfaces, repainting of markings, replacement of nets, and fence repairs where appropriate.

When will the works start and be completed?

Work on sites is due to start this autumn with completion across all courts anticipated by spring 2025. Exact dates for the courts on each park are as follows;

  • Wilton Park – 14th October – expected completion 16th December 2024
  • Crow Nest Park – 10th October – expected completion 12th December 2024
  • Greenhead Park – October – expected completion Spring 2025

Where else can I play tennis?

Alternative court facilities are available across Kirklees including Batley Sports and Tennis Club provided by Kirklees Active Leisure alongside some independent tennis clubs where sessions can be booked by individuals and non-members.

Councillor Yusra Hussain, Cabinet Member for Culture and Greener Kirklees said;

“This is a fantastic investment in our court facilities within our parks and I welcome the opportunities the refurbished courts will provide. Hopefully it will encourage children and adults to get active, providing physical and mental health and wellbeing benefits to all who use them.

“This significant investment will ensure Kirklees residents and our communities have access to high quality court facilities for many years to come, ensuring tennis can remain in our parks well into the future.”

Julie Porter, Chief Operating Officer at the LTA, said:

“We are delighted to be working with Kirklees Council to improve their park tennis facilities and provide more opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and get active. This investment is part of the UK Government and LTA’s Parks Tennis Project and will mean that courts will be available for people to use for years to come. We will also be working closely with Kirklees Council to ensure that the local community have a range of accessible opportunities to get on court and open up our sport to many more people.”

The project is part of a nationwide investment by the LTA Tennis Foundation, delivered by the LTA, to refurbish public tennis courts across Great Britain, and open up the sport to many more people.

Once the courts reopen sessions will be available to book online via the LTA website, details of which will be released nearer the time.
