Mayor receives the first Poppy as campaign is launched

The Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Nosheen Dad, had the honour of receiving the first poppy in Huddersfield as the Royal British Legion launched their Remembrance campaign.

Communities throughout Kirklees will come together on Remembrance Sunday on 10 November and Armistice Day to remember those who have given their lives in wars and conflicts.

Cllr Dad said:

“The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign held every year at Remembrance time.

“As we wear our poppies, let us remember the sacrifices made and the lives lost.

“It is also a symbol of our commitment to support the ongoing needs of our veterans and their families.

“Your generosity ensures that their legacy lives on and enables the Royal British Legion to provide essential services, medical care, and support to those who have given so much for our freedom.”

Battles of Kohima and Imphal

This year marks the 80th anniversaries of the Battles of Kohima and Imphal, in north-east India. The Fourteenth Army, with the majority of its troops from pre-partition India, courageously held off repeated attacks by Japanese forces for months, but at great cost.

The eventual defeat of Japanese forces was a turning point in the war in the east, and the springboard for the eventual liberation of Burma.

Operation Market Garden

In September of 1944 Operation Market Garden was a daring attempt to secure key bridges in German-occupied Netherlands.  Some 35,000 paratroopers and glider-borne soldiers landed behind enemy lines to capture towns and bridges, supported by a ground force of another 50,000.  Their bravery made Market Garden one of the most famous battles of the war.
