Upcoming changes to Household Waste Recycling Centres

A timeline has been confirmed, for the upcoming changes to three of the borough’s five Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

Nab Lane HWRC will close to the public from 4pm Sunday 10 November. The nearest alternative site is Weaving Lane, Dewsbury. Also from this date, Bromley Farm and Meltham HWRCs will begin their new operating hours: Bromley Farm will be closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, while Meltham will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. These changes were approved at October’s cabinet meeting as one of many cost-saving measures being implemented across the council.

Prior to these changes, the winter opening hours for all Kirklees HWRCs will come into effect. The opening hours change annually when the clocks change, the winter opening times will commence on Sunday 27 October, with all sites open 8am – 4pm daily at all sites.

A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said:

“These changes to our Household Waste and Recycling Centres have allowed us to save nearly £200k over the next two financial years while maintaining the peak opening times across the remaining sites.

“We have had to make difficult decisions in the current financial climate but this proposal still leaves Birstall and Birkenshaw residents with the industry-recommended journey time to their nearest HWRC. The closure of Nab Lane will also put Kirklees at a level of service comparable to that of Leeds, Bradford, and Wakefield when comparing density of provision.”
