Specialist equipment event to show how Kirklees residents can live independently at home
Residents are encouraged to come explore how different types of assistive technology, equipment and home adaptations can help them with everyday tasks that are challenging.
Kirklees Council and Medequip UK are holding a specialist equipment display outside the Huddersfield Library Hub on Friday 08 November 9:30am-3:30pm. It is free to attend, and anyone can come along to try out items on display including kitchen aids like jar openers and tap turners, as well as personal care items such as cream applicators and eye dropper dispensers.
The role of an Occupational Therapist
There will also be an opportunity to speak with Occupational Therapists; learn how to access support services and explore equipment, adaptations or therapy interventions designed to help them maintain their independence at home for longer.
Occupational Therapists support residents who might struggle with day-to-day tasks like self-care, household chores, or getting out and about. They take a more rounded approach to help maximise a person’s strengths so they can remain independent and continue to carry out everyday tasks with confidence.
Councillor Beverley Addy, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health said:
“I know how a change in circumstances, due to a health condition or injury, can mean even simple tasks can become challenging and what a knock-on effect that can have in your life in general. When this happens, however, it isn’t necessary, to just struggle on. I’m proud to say, the council has a great team that can help you find the right support to regain your independence.
“By organising this event we hope to show people what help is available so they can regain their confidence, reduce anxiety, and continue to live life on their terms. I encourage people to come along and see what support they can access for themselves or a loved one. Kirklees Council is committed to enabling people to enjoy living independently for as long as possible and through this event we hope to do just that.”
Alex Roberts, Retail and Engagement Manager, Medequip said:
“Medequip are thrilled to be supporting Kirklees Council during Occupational Therapy Week 2024. Occupational Therapists play a vital role in enabling people to live independently and safely, and we are proud to collaborate in highlighting the importance of their work. Medequip is committed to supporting occupational therapy professionals by providing high-quality equipment and services that promote independence, and this partnership allows us to showcase how our solutions contribute to the health and wellbeing of individuals in the community. Together with Kirklees Council, we are working to raise awareness, share best practices, and offer practical demonstrations of the latest innovations in daily living aids and equipment.”
