We want your input on the new appraisal, management plan and shopfront guidance to preserve the heritage of Huddersfield

We are seeking input from the public on new guidance that identifies heritage within Huddersfield’s conservation area. It will set out a series of management proposals and tools to protect heritage assets and support regeneration projects within town centre blueprints and beyond.

We have secured funding from Historic England to develop these proposals after the Huddersfield Town Centre Conservation Area became part of Historic England’s National Heritage at Risk Register in 2020. Being on this risk register means that Historic England want to work with us to find ways to protect the heritage in this area.

This also follows us working alongside Historic England to preserve, and revamp buildings like the Grade II* listed George Hotel, and improve the historic Byram Arcade. The High Street Heritage Action Zone scheme was introduced to bring a new life to the buildings that can be enjoyed for years to come.

With input from residents, delivering a finalised appraisal, management plan and shopfront guidance will build a foundation for heritage-led, decision making that will help plan and shape future projects within conservation areas.

We are running a consultation for the Conservation Area Appraisal, Management Plan and Shop Front Design Guide from Monday 11 November to Friday 22 November.

Complete the consultation and view the Huddersfield conservation area appraisal, management plan and shop front guidance online or in the reception area of Civic Centre 1 Monday to Friday – 9am – 4pm. Alternatively, email the Conservation & Design team at conservationdesign@kirklees.gov.uk.

Councillor Graham Turner said:

“Kirklees’ conservation areas hold such strong heritage, with a great amount of history and unique characteristics that shine through the Victorian architecture dating back to the 1800’s.

“Our towns have so much to offer and putting this guidance in place will give them a new way of life whilst protecting and maintaining the heritage.

“Your input on the appraisal, plan and guidance will help us shape future projects to put heritage at the heart of the proposals and will create a town centre that people want to visit. We would very much appreciate it if you could take some time to tell us what you think.”
