Huddersfield Art Gallery curates’ high profile contemporary art prize
Huddersfield Art Gallery have partnered with Yorkshire Artspace in Sheffield to curate the Contemporary British Painting Prize exhibition 2024.
Since its inception in 2016, the well-respected national prize has always premiered in Huddersfield before heading to a venue in London, with Huddersfield Art Gallery being one of its founding partners.
Temporarily relocated
Whilst works continue on Our Cultural Heart scheme, The Contemporary British Painting Prize, curated by Huddersfield Art Gallery, will this year be exhibiting at Yorkshire Artspace: Persistence Works, Sheffield from 30 November 2024 until 11 January 2025. The exhibition can be visited each week from Thursday to Saturday, 12pm until 4pm.
Contemporary British Painting is artist led and showcases the current trends in British painting. The annual prize celebrates the very best of contemporary paintings from the British Isles, with this years’ prize attracting 1,215 painters, the most entries since the prize’s inception.
Councillor Carole Pattison, Leader of Kirklees Council and Cabinet Member for Culture said:
“The museums and gallery team have worked hard in continuing to develop opportunities for everyone to access and enjoy visual art, whilst the building which housed Huddersfield Art Gallery is temporarily closed to enable works to take place as part of Our Cultural Heart regeneration project. They have created some incredible relationships with venues across Yorkshire, ensuring we can continue to showcase the talent this prize attracts, and build partner and audience support our new art gallery offer being developed within Our Cultural Heart.
“This year sees the introduction of two new awards, presented in the name of Holmfirth artist and former Chair of the Contemporary British Painting Prize, Judith Tucker who passed away in November 2023, a fitting tribute for an inspirational artist.”
