We are investing in major town centre car park

We are making a significant investment to improve the Upperhead Row parking facilities, situated above Huddersfield Bus Station.

Contractors have been appointed to begin the refurbishments which are scheduled to start later this February. Works will include structural enhancements, installation of a new fire detection system, enhanced CCTV coverage, replacement fire doors, upgraded entrance and exit ramps and lighting, and ramp safety heating to counteract snow and ice.

Refurbishment works will be carried out in phases with different levels of the car park closed off during each phase resulting in a reduction of available spaces ranging from 40 to 150 dependent on the phase. Traffic management and signage will be in place to direct vehicles.

Once the refurbishment is complete there will be an overall reduction of 71 spaces due to the increase in the width of bays to accommodate larger modern vehicles, as well as additional accessible parking bays rising from 11 to 22.

Alternative long stay car parks are available a short distance away from Upperhead Row at Springwood and Cambridge Road during this period of works and beyond.

Councillor Moses Crook, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Transport, said:

“This investment will provide safer, more modern parking facilities at Upperhead Row improving the experience for all users at one of the Huddersfield’s central car parks and enhancing the overall parking offer in the town.

“It comes ahead of the planned multi-million-pound transformation of Huddersfield Bus Station by West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) in partnership with Kirklees Council. Alongside railway station improvements at Huddersfield as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) works by Network Rail.”

Upperhead Row car park works are anticipated to be completed in Spring 2026.
