Civic reception and Iftar marks International Women’s Day and Commonwealth Day
The Mayor of Kirklees hosted a Civic reception and Iftar to mark International Women’s Day and Commonwealth Day.
The event at Huddersfield Town Hall saw esteemed guests attend including HM Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Ed Anderson, and the High Sheriff of West Yorkshire Professor Adeeba Malik CBE DL.
Civic representatives from across West Yorkshire, faith leaders and Kirklees Council staff representing the employee networks were also in attendance.
The Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Nosheen Dad, said:
“The reception was a great opportunity to celebrate International Women’s Day which was over the weekend and Commonwealth Day. Diversity is one of our many strengths as a district. A strength I am immensely proud of and one I wanted to highlight. We also gathered to celebrate women, in particular the women of Kirklees who through their amazing work in their respected fields have put us on the international map.
“I would like to thank all the speakers and guests who attended the Civic reception.”
Commonwealth Day
Commonwealth Day is an annual celebration observed by millions across the Commonwealth in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe.
This year is the 75th anniversary of The Commonwealth, and this year’s theme, ‘Together We Thrive’.
International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day (IWD) honours the achievements of women across all aspects of life – social, economic, cultural, and political.
The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality and provides an important platform to engage with communities and reflect on progress.
Both days saw their respective flags flown at the town halls in Kirklees.
