Phase 3 of Huddersfield Southern Corridors improvement scheme due to start next week

Lockwood bar

From Monday 17 March 2025, the next phase of the Huddersfield Southern Corridor improvement programme is due to commence at Lockwood Bar, a popular route into Huddersfield town centre.

We are working on the improvement scheme with works on this phase expected to be completed early 2026.

Currently, the southern corridors into Huddersfield town centre can experience queuing traffic and delays during busy times of the day, with limited footpaths and cycle lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. Reducing the amount of traffic through this community area of Lockwood Bar is a priority and will improve air quality in the local area.

What improvements are we making

Works will see the left turn from Lockwood Road into bridge street and the right turn from Bridge Street into Lockwood Road limited to buses only. A new link road with traffic Signals at Crowther Street will provide a two-way traffic link between Albert Street and Lockwood Road. Pedestrian crossings will be provided across Lockwood Road and Crowther Street. The final stages will also see resurfaced carriageways and footways, new kerbing and some landscaping.

Councillor Moses Crook, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Transport said:

“We want to make it easier and safer for everyone to travel around Kirklees whether that’s on public transport, car, motorbike, bicycle, or as a pedestrian. We understand that this is a lengthy disruption, but once we have completed this phase of the Huddersfield Southern Corridor, it will address any current congestion problems and make significant improvements to journey times and air quality for residents at a key route into and out of Huddersfield town centre.

“With better provision for cyclists and pedestrians and greater links to public transport, there are more realistic options for people to choose how they travel.

“I would like to thank everyone in advance who may be affected for their patience and understanding whilst these important works are carried out.”

The works will take place Monday to Friday with any noisy work restricted throughout the night.

Signage is already in place advising of the works starting. Signed diversion routes and traffic management will be in place once work as commenced.

Huddersfield Southern Corridors scheme

Lockwood Bar works is the third of four stages of the Huddersfield Southern Corridor scheme with improvements previously completed at key locations including Queens Street South, Folly Hall and Queensgate and Shorehead roundabout in the town centre. The final stage will include works at Long Royd Lane which is expected to start in 2026.

How is the project funded?

The Huddersfield Southern Corridors scheme forms part of wider plans to improve road access across Kirklees and is funded through the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund.

The West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund is supported through the Leeds City Region Growth Deal – a £1 billion package of Government investment through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) and Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to accelerate growth and create jobs across the Leeds City Region.
