Electric vehicle charging points to be installed across Kirklees

Cabinet have approved plans to install electric vehicle charging points in at least 20 car parks across Kirklees.

This comes after Kirklees Council secured just under £2.5 million in a grant from the government, with the opportunity to increase this further with private investment

Funded through the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, the initiative aims to improve electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the district.

Initially, chargers will be installed in at least 20 council-owned car parks, that are ideally located for residents without access to off-street parking.

Further expansion into on-street locations is planned for later phases of the scheme.

The initiative aligns with Kirklees Council’s ambition to become net zero and climate ready by 2038.

Councillor Moses Crook, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said:

“As electric vehicles become more popular, the LEVI funding and private investment enables us to vastly improve the charging infrastructure in Kirklees.

“This pilot scheme is a critical step in making electric vehicles more accessible. We know that many households without off-street parking are currently limited if they have an electric vehicle. These new chargers mean that if someone wants to make the switch to an electric vehicle, it will be a more practical option.”

The first installations are expected to begin later this year.

Through West Yorkshire Combined Authority, our region has been awarded £1.5 million of LEVI funding and £14.3 million of further LEVI Capital funding to install close to home residential electric vehicle charging points. This is in addition to over £1.5 million of capability funding to support officers working on electric vehicle programmes.
