Today is the Day: New Kirklees campaign empowers smokers to quit, starting today

today is the day

We are launching Today is the Day, a new stop smoking campaign designed to support residents aged 18 and over to take the first step toward a smokefree life.

The campaign is being rolled out alongside the expansion of the Kirklees Wellness Service, now established as the primary provider of stop smoking support across the district.

Developed in collaboration with the council’s public health team, local residents, behavioural insight specialists, healthcare professionals, and community stakeholders, the campaign is part of Kirklees Council’s continued effort to reduce smoking rates and improve health outcomes across the borough.

Councillor Beverley Addy, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health said:

“Smoking remains one of the biggest causes of preventable ill health and premature death in Kirklees. ‘Today is the Day’ is about promoting the support in place here in Kirklees and encouraging our residents to take that first step towards becoming smokefree. We’re making it easier than ever to get the help you need, when and how you need it.”

Also launching on 1 July is the expanded Kirklees Wellness Service, now the main provider and single point of access for stop smoking support in Kirklees. Strengthened with additional funding from a government supplementary grant, additional wellness coaches can support more people with a free personalised holistic wellness offer.

Local GPs, pharmacies, and social prescribers will now be able to refer patients directly to Kirklees Wellness Service, streamlining support and ensuring a consistent and efficient offer for all communities in Kirklees.

In addition, the Smokefree App is now for all Kirklees residents to download for free. This cutting-edge mobile phone app provides a simple, convenient digital platform that offers daily support including tips and motivation from trained professionals.
