A huge ‘well done’ to our amazing children in care
We have proudly celebrated children and young people who are in care across Kirklees, staging two special events to mark their incredible achievements.
The Shining Stars and Recognition Awards brought together carers, staff and partners who look after some of the district’s most vulnerable children. The events highlighted not only the talent of the young people but also the strength of the community that surrounds and supports them.
Many children and young people in care face extra challenges compared to their peers – and the council does a huge amount of work to help them thrive, reach their potential and achieve the best possible outcomes.
The annual events are a powerful way to showcase their talents and more than 350 children and young people, aged from 5 to 16, were recognised for their accomplishments.
Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:
“It’s always a joy to spend time with such inspiring young people and to show them how proud we are of their achievements. We hope that taking part in these events gives them even more confidence to dream big and fulfil their potential.
“Supporting our children in care is one of our highest priorities in Kirklees. With the help of our partners, we are committed to opening doors to new opportunities and helping every young person to feel valued and celebrated.”
Successes were marked in categories including personal achievement, academic achievement, contribution in the community and going above and beyond.
The events provided a joyful atmosphere for the many children and young people who attended.
This year they were kindly supported by local organisations and businesses including Hudd Show Live, West Yorkshire 360 Photo Booth, Lost Property Coffee Shop and Kitchen and West Yorkshire Fire Service.
One young person who received a certificate for personal achievement shared:
“I’m really happy I came. I made new friends, went on stage to collect my certificate and had such a good time.”
