We’re sharing plans to improve walking, wheeling and cycling facilities in Netherton.

The project aims to develop a new, accessible section of Meltham Greenway between Crosland Factory Lane picnic site and the Fold Farm housing development.

Proposals for the former railway embankment include the construction of a 755 metre long path to improve accessibility for everyone walking, wheeling and cycling, as well as new planting, wayfarer signage, and additional cycle parking.

Councillor Crook, Cabinet Member for Transport and Housing said:

“By continuing to invest in sustainable transport and our green spaces, we’re creating more opportunities for people to enjoy the wonderful outdoor environment Kirklees has to offer and empowering more people of all ages and abilities to support their own physical health and wellbeing.

“I want to encourage as many people as possible to take part in the consultation, especially those who will benefit the most. Your views are essential in helping shape a scheme that truly reflects the community.”

Cllr Peter Carlill, Deputy Chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transport Committee, said:

“Extending the Meltham Greenway will open up opportunities for people to get around more easily, with lasting benefits for their health and wellbeing.

“Improving routes like this will be a vital part of our integrated Weaver Network joining up all the transport options across West Yorkshire.

“I’d encourage people to have their say and help shape a greener, better-connected region where everyone can get where they need to go safely, easily and sustainably.”

Consultation is live

Anyone can take part in the consultation, which will be available online from Thursday 9 October until Sunday 9 November. The plans are now available for review and comment.

Existing sections of Meltham Greenway include a 1.3 kilometre shared-use path from Meltham to Huddersfield Road, a 250 metre section of greenway and a picnic site adjacent to Crosland Factory Lane.

The scheme is part of a wider programme of investment in the transport network across Kirklees and is funded through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority via Active Travel England’s Consolidated Active Travel Fund.

The Consolidated Active Travel Fund supports the development and construction of walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure.
