George Hotel plans approved to preserve its heritage and boost local economy
We have approved revised plans for the historic George Hotel, that will preserve the building’s character and boost its earning potential.
Working closely with architects and Historic England, we submitted new plans in April after an opportunity was identified to rework the original proposals. This would see an additional 17 more hotel rooms created whilst still showcasing the building’s beautiful architecture and heritage.
Once finished, the hotel will have 108 rooms instead of the 91 originally planned. Work now remains to renovate the building to make it into a thriving hotel once again.
Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, said:
“The exciting, updated plans being approved for the George Hotel is another major milestone in the Huddersfield Blueprint and for the future of this Huddersfield icon
“It is one of the town’s most treasured landmarks that proudly overlooks St. George’s Square. Its central location not only places it at the heart of the town but also makes it one of the first sights to greet rail travellers arriving in Huddersfield. It is a perfectly positioned hotel with the potential to play a key role in supporting our local economy. The fact that it will be operated by the world-renowned Radisson Group under their Radisson RED brand makes it even more exciting.
“Our ambitious vision for Huddersfield town centre is becoming a reality with the opening of the Light at Kingsgate and the enhancements to the public realm on New Street and St. Peter’s Gardens.
“Along with our landmark regeneration project, Our Cultural Heart taking shape, improvements to shop fronts along John William Street and external investments like the University of Huddersfield’s National Health Innovation Campus we are putting Huddersfield firmly back on the map.”
Standing right at the bustling heart of the town centre, the new hotel will include a bar, restaurant, gym and conference rooms.
Huddersfield town centre continues to benefit from major cultural, business and education investments. The multimillion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade is improving connectivity and Huddersfield Railway Station itself, which is on the George Hotel’s doorstep bringing more visitors than ever to the town.
The George Hotel is perfectly placed to accommodate this boost in visitor numbers which is why we have taken the opportunity to increase the number of rooms and use the building to its full potential.
