Could you be a Shared Lives Carer?
We are calling on local residents to make a life-changing difference by becoming Shared Lives carers, providing vital support for adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities or mental health needs in the community.
Chris, 61, experienced a sudden and upsetting change when his mum became ill. With a learning disability and having relied on her for daily support, Chris was unable to live independently. He was referred to Shared Lives by his social worker, initially for a short‑term emergency placement. Over time, it became clear that Chris was unable to return home, and he was matched with Shared Lives carers for long‑term support. Chris now feels safe, supported, and truly valued
Chris’s carers, Anura and Sara, provided stability during his mother’s illness and after her passing, ensuring he stayed connected with his family, including his brother in the Midlands. The placement also supports Chris to enjoy his hobbies, such as American pool. With the support of his Shared Lives Day support carer, as well as spending time at their home he now attends weekly pool sessions and has even participated in tournaments. Shared Lives also supports Chris through short breaks, where he likes to go for a holiday and have a rest from his routines at home.
Chris said:
“Anura is nice and Sara makes nice curries. My Fridays are nice because it’s my Pool Day – If you pick the right family it’s good. It’s important to get the right match – it’s a lovely match at the moment.
Cllr Nosheen Dad, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said:
“Becoming a Shared Lives carer is a unique opportunity to change someone’s life for the better — while enriching your own. It’s a flexible role that can work around existing commitments, offering both personal fulfilment and an income. We’re looking for people who are willing to open their homes and hearts to adults who need support to live well and independently. Our experienced Shared Lives teams are with carers every step of the way, providing guidance, training and reassurance. If you’re considering opening your home, making a real difference, and experiencing the lasting rewards of helping others, I strongly encourage you to get in touch with our friendly team.”
What is Shared Lives?
Shared Lives is a scheme a bit like fostering, but for adults. Approved carers provide a safe, supportive family environment where individuals can thrive and participate in everyday life. Placements can be long-term, short breaks, or day support, tailored to suit both the individual’s and carer’s needs.
Becoming a Shared Lives Carer requires:
- A spare room in your home – to provide long term and overnight short breaks.
- Time, patience, and a caring attitude
- Willingness to work with the Shared Lives Scheme, complete training, and safeguarding checks
Carers are carefully matched with individuals whose needs and personalities fit their household, ensuring positive experiences for both parties.
By opening your home, you can transform someone’s life, earn an income, and become part of a meaningful community network.
