Walking together – Meet the Dewsbury Library Walking Group

local walking group

The Dewsbury Library Walking Group shows what happens when a simple idea meets community spirit. What began as a few conversations about the value of fresh air and gentle movement has grown into a thriving, community‑led group that brings people together every week.

How it started

Community Plus is a free service in Kirklees which support individuals and communities to live happier, healthier lives.

While a Community Connector from the service was out walking with a participant, an idea sparked between them about the benefits walking could bring to more people in Dewsbury.

With support from Community Plus, this participant agreed to launch the Dewsbury Library Walking Group.

Dewsbury Library offered a welcoming base, providing space and refreshments after each walk. Two volunteers completed walk‑leader training with support from Community Plus and local charity S2R Support to Recovery, and a gentle, accessible route was created.

The walks

The weekly walks last around an hour at a relaxed pace, followed by time to chat over tea and biscuits.

Those who have taken part describe feeling lighter, calmer and more connected. Friendships have formed across ages, backgrounds, and abilities – the group ranges from people in their twenties to a 90‑year‑old member.

The walks regularly attract around ten people and everyone is welcome.

Trips out

With help from the Community Plus Fund, the group has ventured further afield, enjoying trips to Flamborough, Whitby and Beningbrough Hall and some members now meet independently for coffee.
