Regeneration programme laid out to revitalise Huddersfield Market
Work will begin on the temporary market site this month that will provide a market provision in Huddersfield to supporting traders and visitors as the regeneration programme of the town’s historic market hall commences.
Plans for the Grade II* listed hall and surrounding site were approved by Kirklees Council’s Planning Committee in April to secure its future, protect its heritage and build on the existing offer.
The programme of works will be carried out in carefully sequenced phases to ensure the market remains open and trading throughout the construction period, minimising disruption to traders and the public.
From June to August, phase 1 will see the temporary market constructed on land between the current market on Brook Street and the Tesco car park.
The temporary market has been designed to make sure traders can continue to welcome shoppers in a flexible space. It will have 36 indoor stalls and 30 outdoor stalls space for up to 28 additional stalls on Byram Street on busier market days. The temporary market will also have public and accessible toilets, a market office and space for other essential facilities.
The main Market Hall will remain open to traders and customers as normal during the first phase.
Work continues on arrangements for the move to the temporary market with our markets team working with traders to accommodate them. Traders who are currently based on the market yard will be relocated onto Byram Street.
The second phase of the programme will see hoarding installed around the full perimeter of the Market Hall and site compound in August to safely separate construction works from the public and the temporary market.
The main hall works will see essential repairs and restoration of the market’s decorative cast-iron frame and roof, bringing back its original colour scheme of traditional reds, pinks, and creams. Improvements will also be carried out to make the hall more accessible and include ramps, automatic doors, accessible toilets, including a new Changing Places facility. The indoor space will also be levelled to make it easier for shoppers to move around.
The final two phases will see the opening of the revamped market hall in January 2028 and the completion of work on the Market Yard and public space in early 2028.
The new market hall will have over 87 pitches. This includes 12 larger permanent stalls with built-in services and storage, and more than 75 demountable stalls for market days. The new demountable stalls inside will be around 50% larger than current ones, giving traders more space and greater flexibility in how they operate
Resurfacing, new paving, drainage and street furniture will be introduced in areas surrounding the market. New landscaping, lighting and wayfinding will enhance the environment and improve connections to the town centre.
The Market Yard will have space for 52 demountable trader pitches. There will also be space for eight stalls on Brook Street and 28 on Byram Street.
Work continues with traders on arrangements for the move to the temporary market.
The regeneration of Huddersfield Market is a key part of the Huddersfield Blueprint, which aims to boost footfall and create a more vibrant, varied town centre. It complements the ongoing Our Cultural Heart development, the regeneration of the George Hotel and the TransPennine Rail Upgrade. Together, these schemes will give residents and visitors even more reasons to spend time in Huddersfield.
