Aerial footage shows regeneration progress of the George Hotel

George Hotel

Work is progressing at pace for the iconic George Hotel, with developments taking place both internally and externally on the Grade II* listed building

The demolition of the former kitchen at the rear of the building along with the chimney has been completed. Internally a soft strip has taken place with non-structural elements such as fixtures, fittings, ceilings, and flooring removed, preparing the building for work to start and the restoration of features.

Removal of the John William Street roof and facade is taking place. The historic stone front facing John William Street is being carefully removed and preserved. This will allow for the extension of the hotel and the original stone reinstated, so the building maintains its distinctive three-storey character.

Above this, the existing roof will be replaced with two stylish new storeys of accommodation, thoughtfully set back to respect the original frontage.

David Shepherd, Executive Director for Place said:

“As one of the flagship projects within the Huddersfield Blueprint, the restoration of the George Hotel is a powerful example of how we are investing in our town centre while respecting and protecting our heritage.

“It’s fantastic to see work gathering pace both inside and out, and you can see the careful and precise work that is taking place to dismantle parts of the building.

“Alongside upcoming work on Huddersfield Market, the opening of Phase 1 of Our Cultural Heart, and the completion of restored shops on John William Street, this marks an exciting moment for our town and underlines our long-term commitment to breathing new life into our historic buildings and public spaces.”

The Grade II listed building will be managed by the Radisson Hotel Group. It’s currently set to become the first Radisson RED Hotel across the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber.

An important landmark adjacent to the Huddersfield Railway Station, The George Hotel was the first building on St George’s Square in 1851. The Grade II* listed building is being upgraded which will see 108 hotel rooms created, a bar, restaurant, gym and conference rooms.

The regeneration of the George Hotel is a key part of the Huddersfield Blueprint, which aims to boost footfall and create a more vibrant, varied town centre.

It complements the completed works at Byram arcade, which restored another much-loved historic building, alongside the ongoing Our Cultural Heart development, with Phase 1 due to open in summer 2026, and the council’s plans for Huddersfield Market. The George Hotel also sits in Huddersfield’s Investment Zone, and the Station to Stadium corridor which will see growth in the area and more jobs brought into town. Together, these projects will significantly improve the town centre experience, giving residents and visitors even more reasons to spend time in Huddersfield.
