New Leader Elected for Kirklees Council
Cllr Sarah Wood (Reform UK) has been elected Leader of Kirklees Council at a meeting of all councillors held this evening (Wednesday 15 July 2026) at Huddersfield Town Hall.
Cllr Wood was elected after securing a majority of votes cast by councillors at the meeting. The election follows two previous meetings where no candidate for the leadership of the council had been able to secure a majority.
As Leader of the Council, Cllr Wood will now appoint a Cabinet which will be responsible for taking forward the council’s key decision-making responsibilities and overseeing the delivery of services and priorities across Kirklees.
