Mobile cervical screening unit returns to communities across Kirklees
Our mobile cervical screening unit is returning this summer, making it even easier for those eligible to access potentially life-saving cervical screening closer to home.
Following the success of the pilot earlier this year, the mobile unit will visit 16 different locations across Kirklees between August and October, offering free, convenient drop-in appointments with no booking required.
Delivered by our Public Health Team in partnership with Locala, the initiative aims to remove some of the barriers that prevent women and people with a cervix from attending their routine cervical screening appointments.
Cervical screening plays a vital role in preventing cervical cancer. It checks for certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause changes to the cells of the cervix. Detecting these changes early means they can be monitored or treated before cancer develops.
The screening usually takes less than five minutes, with the whole appointment lasting around 10 minutes. The mobile unit provides a safe, private and welcoming environment, with all screenings carried out by experienced female healthcare professionals. Visitors are also welcome to bring a friend, family member or chaperone for additional support.

“Cervical screening can save lives, but we know that busy schedules, family commitments, travel difficulties or concerns about the test can sometimes make it difficult for people to attend an appointment.
“By bringing this friendly, professional service directly into our communities, we’re making it easier than ever for people to access screening and take an important step in looking after their health.
“If you’ve received an invitation or know you’re overdue for screening, I’d encourage you to make use of the mobile unit while it’s in your area. There’s no need to book, the test only takes a few minutes, and our team will do everything they can to make sure you feel comfortable, supported and at ease throughout.”

Anyone who is due or overdue for cervical screening can attend the mobile unit without an appointment or contact their GP practice to arrange an appointment.
