Temporary Huddersfield market to open for business and support traders
The new temporary Huddersfield market will open for business and support traders as work starts on revitalising the town’s historic market hall.
Based on land between the current market on Brook Street and the Tesco car park opposite the current market hall, the temporary market will open its doors on 13 August. It has been designed to make sure traders can continue to welcome shoppers in a flexible space.
The temporary market will have 36 indoor stalls and 30 outdoor stalls with space for up to 28 additional stalls on Byram Street on busier market days. Public and accessible toilets, a market office and space for other essential facilities have also been installed.

“We know how important it is to maintain a market presence in the town and the temporary market allows us to do this and its location makes sure there is a familiarity for customers and visitors.
“The first phase of the regeneration scheme has been completed and we have been able to create the temporary market with minimal disruption by keeping the main market hall open during the work. Our markets team have been working hard with traders to listen to their needs and accommodate them at the new temporary site.
“This is a big milestone as we now move to phase two of the major project as we start work on the Grade II* listed market hall where the renovation work will secure its future, protect its heritage and build on the existing offer for customers.”
Hoarding will now be installed around the full perimeter of the Grade II* listed Market Hall and site compound to safely separate construction works from the public and the temporary market.
The main hall works will see essential repairs and restoration of the market’s decorative cast-iron frame and roof, bringing back its original colour scheme of traditional reds, pinks, and creams.
Improvements will also be carried out to make the hall more accessible and include ramps, automatic doors, accessible toilets, including a new Changing Places facility. The indoor space will also be levelled to make it easier for shoppers to move around.
The new market hall will have over 87 pitches. This includes 12 larger permanent stalls with built-in services and storage, and more than 75 demountable stalls for market days. The new demountable stalls inside will be around 50% larger than current ones, giving traders more space and greater flexibility in how they operate
The regeneration of Huddersfield Market is a key part of the Huddersfield Blueprint, which aims to boost footfall and create a more vibrant, varied town centre. It complements the ongoing Our Cultural Heart development, the regeneration of the George Hotel and the TransPennine Rail Upgrade. Together, these schemes will give residents and visitors even more reasons to spend time in Huddersfield.
In November 2023, we successfully secured £16.5m through Government Funding to regenerate the market building. Under the terms of the funding, the investment must be spent by March 2028 and will deliver a modern, attractive market with space for events.
The general markets will be open Monday and Thursday 9am to 4pm.
The second-hand markets will take place on Tuesday, 9am to 3.30pm and on Saturdays 9am to 4pm.
