Thousands vote to name Huddersfield’s new square – Queensgate Square announced
A name chosen by local people
Queensgate Square has been chosen as the name for Huddersfield’s new town centre square, following a public vote.
We saw a fantastic response, with thousands of votes cast. Queensgate Square received 41% of the votes, making it the clear winner.
People from across Kirklees took part, with votes coming from all age groups, from under 16s through to those aged 65 and over.
A new space at the heart of the town
The new square is part of the Our Cultural Heart development and will sit alongside the new library hub and food hall.
It will be a space for events, food and everyday use, right in the heart of Huddersfield town centre.
How the shortlist was developed
The four names in the public vote were developed by our teams using local knowledge and research.
We started with a longer list, then reviewed the options to make sure they would work as a long-term civic name, including checking against existing place names, businesses and landmarks.
A positive response
Councillor John Hardie, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Housing and Transport said:
“This is a great result and it’s been really positive to see so many people take part.
“Queensgate Square is a name people recognise, and it will now become part of a new chapter for Huddersfield town centre as Our Cultural Heart continues to take shape.”
What happens next
The square is due to open next month. Queensgate Square will now become its official name as we move through the final stages of the process.
