Cabinet to consider changes to household recycling collections
Cabinet will meet next week (6 October) to discuss changes to household waste and recycling collections, helping Kirklees stay on track to meet national statutory changes outlined by the UK Government.
Currently, we collect paper and card, steel and aluminium cans, tins and aerosols, plastic pots, tubs, trays and bottles through residents green recycling bin. Glass is recycled through a network of glass banks located across the district.
Additional items to recycle at the kerbside
If the proposals are approved, the changes would allow residents to recycle more materials from home. Glass bottles and jars, food and drink cartons, foil, and metal and plastic tubes would be collected through the existing green recycling bin, and a new bin or container would be introduced for paper and cardboard.
To minimise disruption, households would continue to receive weekly collections, with residents presenting a different recycling bin fortnightly and existing general waste collections would be unaffected.
Councillor Pip Harvey, Cabinet Member for Place, Culture and Volunteering, said:
“By collecting more materials from the kerbside, we’re making it much easier and far more convenient for households in Kirklees to recycle more from home and help meet new national requirements.
“We want to provide a recycling service that works for residents and boosts our recycling rates, but at the same time we want to make sure people are getting value for money and with little disruption to the collection service they’re already familiar with.”
Work to recycle more and reduce landfill
We’re already taking action to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and support a more circular economy. Through our Reuse shops in Huddersfield and Batley, donated and rescued items are given a second life rather than being thrown away. The shops help residents access affordable pre-loved goods while raising money for local good causes.
Countrywide initiative
Simpler Recycling is a government initiative which was rolled out across England earlier this year. The initiative aims to make recycling easier for residents, improve recycling rates, reduce contamination and means more materials can be recycled.
