Huddersfield Art Gallery supports national painting prize exhibition
We’ve partnered with Yorkshire Artspace to showcase some of Britain’s best contemporary artists for the tenth year running!
What is the Contemporary British Painting Prize?
Launched by artist-led organisation Contemporary British Painting in 2016, the Contemporary British Painting Prize is a major national prize which celebrates, explores and promotes the current UK art scene.
The Contemporary British Painting Prize has lots of local links for Kirklees! Once the prizes have been awarded, the winners and shortlisted artworks have traditionally been exhibited in Huddersfield before the exhibition moves to London. But, while Huddersfield Art Gallery is on hiatus – due to work taking place on the exciting new museum and gallery in Our Cultural Heart – its lead curator Grant Scanlan has teamed up with Yorkshire Artspace to host this year’s exhibition at Persistence Works in Sheffield.
About the exhibition
If you’re interested in modern British artwork and what’s next in the medium of painting, this exhibition is for you.
The exhibition shares work by overall prizewinner Ben Sadler, highly commended Christopher Cook, plus many other shortlisted artists.
Also included will be work from Pippa Gatty and Melanie Guatelli, winners of the Judith Tucker Memorial Prize – which was recently launched in memory of the late Holmfirth-based painter. Each year this prize is awarded to two female contemporary artists whose work explores memory, place, landscape and environment.
The judges for this year’s prizes included Georgina Kettlewell, director of Yorkshire Artspace; Katherine Lloyd, who formerly managed the John Moores Painting Prize; and Ryan Mosley, an internationally acclaimed painter and graduate of the University of Huddersfield!
You can explore the exhibition for free at Persistence Works between now and Saturday 17 October, after which it will travel to London.
Councillor Pip Harvey, Cabinet Member for Place, Culture & Volunteering, says:
“It’s fantastic to see successful Kirklees artists helping to shine a light on exciting new contemporary artists and giving them a platform on a national stage. It’s also wonderful to see the legacy of Holmfirth-based artist Judith Tucker continuing to inspire and support new talent. A huge congratulations to all the winners.
“This exhibition is a great example of how, while we prepare for the exciting new Huddersfield Art Gallery as part of Our Cultural Heart, we’re continuing to connect people with art and create opportunities to experience something new. It’s been a fantastic opportunity to work in partnership with other Yorkshire-based arts organisations, bringing people together and creating more opportunities for people across Kirklees and beyond to enjoy, discover and be inspired by art.”
