Makeover for Huddersfield shops mixing its heritage roots and modern feel
A vibrant makeover of shops fronts in Huddersfield town centre which has restored them back to their traditional look is now complete.
Blending heritage with a modern feel, we have been working alongside B&M Properties, the owners of 19 to 33a John William Street, to carefully restore the shop units to their original character, reviving the charm, detail and identity,
Work on the Grade II listed building has seen the replacement of the old aluminium shop fronts and roller shutters with traditional detailing, timber, stall risers and a fascia board which display the name of the business.
Councillor John Hardie, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Highways and Transport said:
“We want to improve our town centres and make them more inviting for residents and shoppers but to also attract more visitors. This project has seen shops on one of Huddersfield’s busiest streets modernised but also preserved it’s amazing history and heritage.
“It has given them a modern but traditional feel that celebrates the architectural significance of the Grade II listed building. Improving our town centres is vital as we want to bring people together and make all of them a destination for everyone to enjoy.”
Funding for the exciting project was secured through our capital grant scheme in December 2023 – the Huddersfield Heritage Led Regeneration Scheme (HLRS).
The scheme is linked to our Kirklees Blueprints which aim to make our town centres safer and more family-friendly, greener and more accessible to everyone. We want to make them more vibrant and varied, giving people more reasons to visit and more to enjoy in the day and at night.
While we modernise our town centres, we are future-proofing Kirklees’ amazing history and heritage breathing new life into historic buildings and preserving much-loved architecture and celebrate the old with the new.
