We’re winter ready!
Despite the mild start to October, winter may feel like it’s some way off for a lot of people but we’re already prepared for winter!
What is our winter maintenance programme
Our winter maintenance programme is in place to help residents, road users and commuters move about the district as safely as possible. We priorities key gritting routes so as many people as possible can access key amenities and essential services like health and social care.
We’ve got 17,000 tonnes of salt stocked. That’s enough salt for about 85 billion fish and chip suppers!
Our crews know the district’s 624 miles of priority routes like the back of their hand and are on standby around the clock, ready to respond to whatever winter has in store day or night helping keep Kirklees on the move.
Volunteer Snow wardens
The Snow Wardens is a UK wide volunteer initiative. Each year, more than 100 volunteers help keep their communities safe during adverse weather by clearing snow from footpaths, spreading grit, and reporting issues with grit bins.
Snow Wardens will receive a shovel, scoop, high vis, show grips, and grit, to help support their communities.
If you’re interested in becoming a snow warden, please send an expression of interest to your local ward Councillor or email snow.wardens@kirklees.gov.uk .
Please note this scheme is capped, so early application is advised.
