Work to start on renovation of Huddersfield Market Hall

Huddersfield Market currently undergoing regeneration works with a large yellow construction fence surrounding the outside.

Work on the renovation and restoration of the Grade II* listed market hall in Huddersfield town centre have now started.

Repairs and construction work on the historic building are being carried out by contractors Willmott Dixon.

Traders and shoppers can now expect to see more activity around the site and roads to allow the regeneration of the hall.

Hoarding has already been installed around the full perimeter of the historic building and site compound to safely separate construction works from the public and the temporary market.

Cllr John Hardie, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Highways and Transport said:

“Regenerating the historic market hall to secure its future, protect its heritage and build on the existing market offer Huddersfield has, is moving to its next exciting stage.

“People will have seen work take place on preparing the site for the renovation, but they will now see a lot more activity around this beautiful Grade II* listed building.

“The temporary market and stalls are still open as normal offering a range of fresh goods and hidden gems, and our markets team will be continuing to work with traders and customers to support them as we move onto this next phase of work.

“The Huddersfield Market scheme is just one key part of revitalising the town centre as we look to deliver clear benefits for our local communities and people will be able to see the much-loved building carefully restored.”

Loved for its decorative cast-iron frame, striking glass roof, and historic character, the regeneration will include essential repairs and restoration, including reinstating its original colour scheme of traditional reds, pinks, and creams, honouring the building’s heritage.

Improvements will also be made to make the hall more accessible and include ramps, automatic doors, accessible toilets, including a new Changing Places facility.

Chris Yates, Yorkshire Director for Willmott Dixon, said:

“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Kirklees Council to deliver a transformation of the historic Huddersfield Market Hall. This is an important project for Huddersfield, creating a refreshed market while paying tribute to its proud heritage to allow the Market Hall to continue supporting the town centre and local traders for many years to come.

“Our project team and local supply chain partners are excited to get formally underway and we’re looking forward to working with the council, market traders and local community as work continues to progress.”

Once completed, the new market hall will have over 87 pitches. This includes up to 12 permanent stalls with built-in services and storage, and more than 75 demountable stalls for market days. The new demountable stalls inside the market hall will be around 50% larger than current ones, giving traders more space and greater flexibility in how they operate.

The market hall will also include an improved food and drink offer which includes three hot food outlets, a new enclosed and heated market cafe and a small bar to support events and evening activity.

Work on Huddersfield Market Hall and the market yard is due to be completed in Spring 2028.
