Voting opens to name Kirklees Council’s new fleet of gritter

We have invested over £1.8 million pounds to secure a dedicated fleet of modern gritters, saving over £400k in rental costs each year.

Now we want you to name them!

We are inviting residents to help vote on names for our brand-new fleet of gritters set to hit Kirklees’ roads this winter.

Primary schools across Kirklees submitted their favourite winter-themed suggestions earlier this year and you can help decide which names will appear on their 12 new vehicles.

Voting will take place across our Facebook and Instagram pages for a week from the 2 November.

Councillor John Hardie, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Highways and Transport, said:

“I’d like to thank all the schools that have taken part, we have had some fantastic suggestions. It’s wonderful to see so much creativity and imagination across Kirklees.

“Our crews provide an invaluable service during winter, keeping roads safe and communities moving. This investment in our winter maintenance fleet will help us continue delivering that vital service for years to come.

“We’ve got the names, now it’s up to the public. Make sure you get involved and help decide which names come out on top.”

We launched our winter maintenance programme on Monday 12 October, which will run to May 2027.

These new vehicles will be used solely for gritting and will be on hand whenever they are needed during severe weather.

Gritters are an essential part of our winter maintenance service and help keep key routes clear and safe, whilst also maintaining access to vital amenities and essential services like health and social care.
