Celebrating the achievements of young people in care

Achieve Awards 2026

We’ve celebrated the achievements, talents and ambitions of young people in care at our annual Achieve Awards.

The awards bring young people together with staff, supporters and partners for an evening dedicated to their achievements – recognising their individual journeys and looking ahead to opportunities the future holds.

The young people were praised for a wide range of successes, such as developing individual talents, overcoming challenges, gaining independence, commitment to education or employment, creating a stable home and involvement in community, sporting or extra-curricular activities.

Adding a personal touch to the evening, a care leaver returned to host the event for the second year running, helping to create a welcoming and celebratory atmosphere.

Awards were presented by The Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Karen Allison, and the Cabinet member for Children’s Services, Cllr Gill Floyd.

Cllr Floyd said:

“The Achieve Awards are a fantastic opportunity to mark the achievements of our young people and celebrate everything they work so hard to accomplish.

“Every young person has their own story, talents and ambitions. We don’t just recognise their success, we also encourage them to believe in their potential.

“As a council we provide a huge amount of support and opportunities, helping our young people to build a positive future.

“We’re very proud of our children and young people in care. It was a privilege to meet so many of them.”

The event was also a showcase for the talents of care leavers, with three young people taking to the stage to perform. Another care leaver led a craft session and there were activities run by partner organisations. Music was provided by DJ Kenzz, while catering was provided by Katie’s Homemade Kitchen.

The University of Huddersfield, Kirklees College, The Brunswick Centre, Fresh Futures and a job coach were present – all partners who work alongside Kirklees Council to help care-experienced young people access opportunities, develop their skills and prepare for adult life.

The event was funded through the charitable pot held by Huddersfield Town Foundation. Donations are always welcomed and help to make the celebration possible.

National Care Leavers Month 2026

The Achieve Awards form part of National Care Leavers Month 2026. The theme for 2026 is, ’ Leading the Way: From Experience to Empowerment’ and highlights care leavers as leaders in their own lives.

During the month, Kirklees Council celebrates its role as corporate parent by joining other councils and organisations to share best practice. The council ensures care-experienced young people have access to education, training, housing advice, wellbeing services and other support which smooths their journey to independence.
