Spen Valley Leisure Centre will open on 28 February
We can now announce that the brand new Spen Valley Leisure Centre will open its doors to the general public on 28 February!
The new centre, based in Liversedge, is the culmination of several years’ planning and building. We know how hotly anticipated its opening has been ever since plans were first announced.
On Monday 28 February the centre will open its doors to the general public bright and early at 6:30am. A wide range of fabulous new facilities and classes available.
Why has the new centre been built?
Spen Valley Leisure Centre is a joint project between Kirklees Council and Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL). The project is to transform the exercise and leisure offering in North Kirklees.
The site was previously home to the outdated Spenborough Swimming Pool and ‘Peak Physique’ fitness suite. The building no longer met people’s growing and changing needs in terms of health and wellbeing. Construction work began just before the first lockdown of the pandemic. This presented many unexpected challenges for the build and our contractors, Kier.
Throughout the development of the new centre, we’ve engaged with local residents to make sure it provides the best possible offering. Throughout the build, the council and Kier have also prioritised employing local companies wherever possible. This is to reinforce our local economy and bringing more value back into Kirklees and our surrounding areas.

Local schoolchildren will be the first to try the new pools
The crowning jewel of the centre is definitely its swim offering. The offering is a huge source of excitement for the local community.
The centre will also be opening exclusively for school swimming lessons slightly earlier on Monday 14 February. The first opportunity to make use of the brand new pool will be given to local schoolchildren. The schools and children benefitting from these very first sessions have been among the groups we’ve involved in the build from the very beginning of the project. We’re excited that they’ll be the first to get their feet wet!
Normal swimming lessons will also start on Saturday 26 February, two days before opening to the general public.
KAL’s special pre-opening offer
If you’re excited to use the centre once it’s opened, KAL currently has a fantastic pre-opening offer available. You can currently register for your first month’s membership for just £5!

“Spen Valley Leisure Centre has truly transformed our health and wellbeing offering in this part of North Kirklees. We know its opening has been eagerly awaited by local residents, and we’re very excited to see all these amazing new spaces and facilities in use.
“We are immensely proud of the finished centre, particularly in light of challenges brought about during the pandemic. Our teams, partners and contractors have worked very hard to deliver this for the public, despite encountering many unexpected hurdles. Seeing the end result, all the hard work is more than worthwhile – and we can’t wait to open the new centres doors to the public.
“This new centre is set to completely transform our health and leisure offer for all ages. We’re committed to making improvements for the health and wellbeing of all our Kirklees residents and investing in our community.”
Dawn Stephenson, Chair of the KAL Board of Trustees, added:
“Spen Valley Leisure Centre is a fantastic new facility for local people, providing some great opportunities to improve your health & wellbeing.
“KAL are delighted to operate the new Leisure Centre on behalf of Kirklees Council and look forward to welcoming customers to come and make use of the site over the years to come.”
Dan Doherty, Regional Director for Kier Construction North & Scotland, said:
“Over the last two years, we have worked with Kirklees Council and KAL to turn their ambitions to build a modern, accessible space with first-class facilities into a reality.
“The leisure centre will soon be open and ready for use, and this has only been made possible by working collaboratively with our local supply chain partners. We are proud to have delivered this new leisure centre that will provide a lasting legacy for the local community and beyond for years to come.”
