Spen Valley Leisure Centre is open

The brand new Spen Valley Leisure Centre is now open!

Get a sneak peek at the centre below…

Spen Valley Leisure Centre has been a joint project between Kirklees Council and KAL, working with local contractor Kier.

The £18.6million centre transforms the exercise and leisure offering in North Kirklees, with a fantastic new array of facilities.

This includes;

  • Two swimming pools
  • A large fitness suite
  • Two fitness studios
  • A cycle studio – providing a wide range of exercise options and classes.

Are the facilities accessible?

Accessibility has been at the forefront of the new centre’s design, and reinvesting in the local economy has been a priority during the build.

Spen Valley Leisure Centre has been eagerly anticipated by local residents ever since the project began in 2018.

At 6:30 am today, the new centre opened its doors to the general public. However, the very first to see inside the centre were local schoolchildren, who were allowed to start school swimming lessons just a few weeks ago – in state-of-the-art pools which are the centre’s pride and joy.

To find out why it’s so important to the North Kirklees community, we spoke to children from the nearby Littletown Primary Academy.  We also caught up with Eileen Fenton, local lifelong swim coach and female winner of the first-ever race across the channel, who was born and raised just miles away in Dewsbury.
