An alternative look at Birkby’s history and geography, exploring hidden green spaces, past and present.

This walk will cover the known development and use of the monument from the Mesolithic to Modern Times.

Exploring Edgar Wood’s Legacy: an Arts & Crafts walk

Starting from Wood’s Briarcourt and ending at his Clock Tower, this walk of around 1.5 miles will introduce the work of celebrated architect Edgar Wood and other local architects.

Explore the history of Greenhead Park*

Explore the history of Huddersfield’s beautiful Victorian town park through a display of old maps, postcards and photographs and an early evening guided walk.

Date: Walk Friday 6 Sept, 6pm, display Saturday 7 Sept, 9:30am – 6pm
Location: The walk starts at the Trinity Street gates, the display is in the Conservatory.

Highfields College

Highfields College 1839-2024 A place of higher education built by the Architect J P Pritchett. Lord Asquith, the last liberal Prime minister, being one of the notable attendees at the college.

Historic Vehicles of David Brown & Rippon Bros*

A unique opportunity to see material from the private family collections of the Rippon Bros and David Brown Families. Cars, tractors and memorabilia will be on display.

Huddersfield Gasworks: a final glimpse

Huddersfield’s iconic gasholder is due for demolition later this year. Guided perimeter tours will allow the site to be viewed, and its history and workings explained, while it still stands.

Huddersfield waterways–from industry to nature

Find out about the history of the Huddersfield canals (Broad and Narrow) and River Colne, including the Snow Island weir from the Chair of the Huddersfield Canal Society.

King James’s School

The school will be open for visitors to take a look round the old parts of the school dating from 1750 to the late 19th century but this year it is hoped to have all the new extensions open for viewing.

HTAFC Original Plans for Leeds Road

Only recently rediscovered, the original plans for Leeds Road, Huddersfield Town’s first and original home, will be on display in public for the first time.

Lindley Clocktower

Climb the 69 steps up the 83 foot Lindley Clocktower, and take in the view from the windows, as well as see the clock mechanism.

Lindley Methodist Church

An illustrated talk on the history of Lindley followed by choral music.

The Newsome Centre

The building (formerly St. John the Evangelist Church) will be open to visitors interested in local history.

Oakes Baptist Church

Following restoration after a fire 30 years ago, some original internal features have been retained, notably a balcony balustrade and decorated ceiling in the upper hall.

Ravensknowle Park Vintage Motorcycle Show*

An opportunity for enthusiasts to get together with others and exhibit their classic bikes, swap stories and experiences in the relaxed surroundings of Ravensknowle Park

St John’s Church, Birkby

Look around the Grade II* listed building, with its Conacher organ reputed to be one of the best in the area. They will have various organists coming to play during HOD opening hours.

St Stephen’s Church, Lindley

Designed by renowned local architect John Oates, and built in 1829 by Joseph Kaye, known as the ‘Builder of Huddersfield’, discover St Stephen’s heritage, including its Mouseman of Kilburn furnishings, beautiful stained glass and peaceful churchyard.

Seventh Day Adventist Church, Crosland Moor

Want to know who the Adventists are? Come along to their open day. Activities on the day will include informal tours, general health checks, gospel music singing, and Pathfinder demonstrations, to name just a few.

Victoria Tower, Castle Hill*

Perched on Castle Hill, Victoria Tower was completed in 1899 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign.

Yorkshire Churches Day Four Churches Walk from Lindley

A guided heritage walk (approx 5 miles) to four Anglican churches starting and ending at St Stephen’s Church, Lindley visiting Birkby St John, Birkby St Cuthbert, and Birchencliffe St Philip via calm green routes where possible.
